Breaking News - Philadelphia Flyers sign defenseman to a max deal
Earlier today it was announced that the Philadelphia Flyers were in contract discussions with former first round pick Travis Sanheim. Sanheim would become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He is currently in the last year of a deal that is paying him $4.675 million per season. In eighty games played last year, Sanheim had seven goals and twenty four assist.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reported that they were discussing a long term deal that could pay Sanheim $6 million dollars per season. This afternoon Friedman confirmed that the deal had finally been completed.
Sanheim is still young defenseman that could patrol the blueline for quite some time for Philadelphia should they choose to keep him and renew his contract. On the other hand, Philadelphia has struggled over the years. With draft picks not panning out and trades that have not worked out Philadelphia seems stuck in a rut. Isn't it time for a rebuild in Philadelphia? They sure seem to be resisting it. Sanheim might be the type of player the Flyers could get future assets for and start to develop some young talent.
Sanheim's deal is an identical deal to the deal to deal signed by new Flames defenseman Mackenzie Weegar. That is a big commitment for a long time. Is this a desperation move by Chuck Fletcher ? Or does Fletcher sincerely believe this team is headed in the right direction ? This season will answer those some of those questions.
