Duncan Keith reaches decision on retirement as Oilers July 1st deadline arrives
The Edmonton Oilers gave both Duncan Keith and Mike Smith a deadline of July 1st to update on the team of their status for next season. This date gave the Oilers approximately 2 weeks to establish a strategy heading into free agency. It was reported like week that Mike Smith has reportedly decided that he's far too injured to continue his NHL career and will eventually be placed on Long Term Injured Reserve.
That left just Keith to make a decision.
According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic, it appears Keith has decided he wants to play next season and will return to the Oilers for a second season.
Keith, 38, has one year remaining at a cap hit of $5,538,462. In his first year as an Oiler, Keith scored 1 goal and bad 20 assists in 64 games.
