Edmonton Oilers General Manager announces the team's plan for Jack Campbell after horrible season
Despite extremely high hopes last season the Edmonton Oilers the team saw their season come to an end in the 2nd round against the eventual Cup Champions, Vegas Golden Knights. The Oilers started rookie standout Stuart Skinner throughout the playoffs, instead of last season's key addition, Jack Campbell. After signing a 5-year, $25,000,000 contract Campbell had a terrible first season with Edmonton.
Campbell's first season in Edmonton was so bad, rumors of being a potential buyout candidate swirled in the early summer. The Oilers also reportedly looked at ways of potentially moving Campbell's contract, but the cost was clearly prohibitive.
Now, it appears the Oilers and General Manager Ken Holland have a plan for Campbell according to Sportsnet's Marc Spector, and it's definitely not what you think.
We're going to start with the seven defensemen who finished last year. The goalies are set.
Standing pat and not doing anything to change the Oilers goaltending situation heading into next season is certainly a choice, especially given how much Campbell struggled. Unfortunately in a salary cap world, all the Oilers can do is hope that he bounces back in a major way.
Campbell, 31, played in 36 games for the Oilers last season compiling a record of 21-9-4 along with 1 shutout a 3.41 goals-against-average and an .888 save-percentage. In this case, the record is deceiving, on the outside, it looks good, but the rest of his numbers aren't that of an NHL calibre goaltender.
For the Oilers sake, I hope his abysmal play last season was a one off. Otherwise the team is going to be once again tasked with trying to outscore his struggles.
