Last night the Calgary Flames found out that Johnny Gaudreau had made the difficult decision to leave Calgary. Gaudreau had spent his entire career in Calgary, but for personal reasons hed decided he wanted to be closer to home.
Gaudreau has been a member of the Flame organization since being drafted in the fourth round 104th overall in the 2011 NHL Draft.
After the news Flames' General Manager, Brad Treliving spoke to the media about the Johnny Gaudreau situation.
Johnny Gaudreau is going to hit free agency, test the market ... it's a disappointing day to say the very least.
I can assure our fans that we have done everything possible to keep John in Calgary ... I want to wish him and his family the very, very best. He gave us 8 great years here.
It is my strong belief that this was a family decision and I respect that fully. John has every right and we have nothing but respect for John the player and John the person.
I firmly believe there's nothing more we could have done. We respect it ... I think this was a real hard decision for John ...I think everybody operated with the right intentions.
While disappointed it's clear Treliving believes that Gaudreau is making the best decision for his own career. The Flames will likely look to be busy today to try and fill these gaps.
