The NHL season is in full swing, but with the New York Islanders finally getting healthy they been forced to place forward Kieffer Bellows on waivers this afternoon. This move comes as a bit of a surprise. Bellows is a 2016 first round pick of the Islanders. Placing him on waivers means they risk losing Bellows for nothing if another NHL club puts in a claim for him. The Islanders never did get the results they were looking for with Bellows. His best season was last year when he recorded six goals and thirteen assists for nineteen points in forty five games. The Islanders have struggled to consistently score goals over the last season and a half and didn't feel like Bellows was a part of their future. Bellows had only skated in one game with New York this season.

In some cases, an NHL club would try to trade a first round pick. Perhaps the Islanders tried this and had no offers that they liked. In any event, Bellows days with New York appear to be over. You would have to think that some NHL club could use a forward up front and take a chance on Bellows. Perhaps a fresh start on another club is exactly what Bellows needs. Bellow has one year left on his contract before he is a restricted free agent after this season. If Bellows does clear waivers and no team claims him, he will be sent to Bridgeport in the American Hockey League.
