We have some sad news to share in the hockey world today as former National Hockey League forward and United States Olympic Head Coach Tony Granato has announced that he's been diagnosed with cancer.

Granato revealed the news of his diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in a post on X.

"I debated how to share this news but I will be taking a temporary leave of absence from NBC Sports Chicago and the Blackhawks broadcasts, as well as NHL Network.

I was recently diagnosed with a form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and will begin treatment this week.

I wish I could reach out to everyone individually, but felt like this was the best way to share the news.

My family, faith, and friends will be my strength to help me through my treatments. I appreciate all the love and support I have received already.

With the holiday season here, cherish the times with your loved ones, as I know I will." Granato said.

The 59-year-old spent 13 seasons in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks where he appeared in 774 games.

After his playing career ended, Granato turned his attention to coaching, spending time behind the bench in the NHL with Colorado, Pittsburgh and Detroit, but was most recently with the University of Wisconsin until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Everyone here at Blade of Steel sends their best wishes to Tony Granato in his battle with cancer and hope to see him back on TV with NBC Sports Chicago as soon as he's able to.
