Former OHL defenceman passes away at age 39
We have some sad news to report on in the hockey world on Monday night as the Ontario Hockey League is in mourning over the loss of a former defenceman.
In a post on their website, the Ontario Hockey League announced the passing of former Windsor Spitfires defenceman Paul Giallonardo at the age of 39.
"The Ontario Hockey League is mourning the loss of an alumnus gone far too soon. Former Windsor Spitfires defenceman Paul Giallonardo passed on Sunday night following a battle with cancer. He was just 39 years-old." The OHL said.
Giallonardo spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, all with the Windsor Spitfires from 2001 to 2005, recording 91 points in 247 career games, before moving on to play for St. Thomas University for the next three seasons.
He wrapped up his playing career in 2008-09 by going overseas to Italy where he suited up Alleghe, appeared in 46 games for them before announcing his retirement.
The thoughts of everyone here at Blade of Steel are with Giallonardo's family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
