Former Stanley Cup Champion passes away at 58-years-old after changing the game forever
In the 1980's the idea of European Players defecting to the United States to play in the National Hockey League was just a pipe dream for many. Players at the time had made the jump from Europe to join Canadian teams, but no one had joined an American team. That was until Petr Klima worked exclusively with the Detroit Red Wings to defect to North America.
Klima managed to change how European players even considered their hockey careers, opening doors for major changes in player transfer options. Klima made his NHL debut in 1985-1986 with the Red Wings playing in 74 games.
In his career Klima played for the Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Klima played 786 games in the NHL scoring 313 goals and adding 260 assists in his career.
Klima was a member of the Stanley Cup Champion, Edmonton Oilers in the 1989/90 season accomplishing his ultimate goal.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Klima's family and friends at this difficult time. Petr was 58-years-old at the time of his passing.
