Former first round pick gives up on the NHL at just twenty-three years old
With the offseason in full swing players are looking towards their futures and what's next. With restricted free agents having limited control of their destiny, players will sometimes look beyond the NHL for their hockey future. Today San Jose Sharks forward Martin Kaut made the decision to move on from the NHL.
Kaut, 23, was drafted 16th overall in the 1st round by the Colorado Avalanche. Last season Kaut was traded to the San Jose Sharks as part of the Matt Nieto trade. After only playing 9 games in San Jose, Kaut has decided to sign with HC Dynamo Pardubice in the Czech Republic.
San Jose Sharks' RFA Martin Kaut has signed with HC Dynamo Pardubice (Czech Republic). His NHL rights remain with the Sharks.
The Sharks will retain Kaut's rights should be decide to return to the NHL in the future. But for now this is a major loss for the Sharks who hoped Kaut would take a big step in their offense next season.
