This summer NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement that the league would be transitioning to a new system for board advertisements. The NHL had decided that in conjuncture with in-arena advertisements, the league would now superimpose live digital advertisements into the play. This is a system that has been used previously in other sports like baseball.

The system has had some hiccups and has run into multiple issues, including issues when the bench doors are open. For many the ads have taken away from the game, but even those who don't hate the ads are indifferent about them at best. But according to Gary Bettman that isn't the case. At yesterday's Board of Governor's Meetings, Bettman made a hilarious comment about how fans feel about the ads.

Bettman says that digital dasherboard ad backlash is a «non-issue» because their polling indicates fans find games more watchable with those digital ads replacing physical ones.

While I personally haven't had any issues with the Digital Advertisements, to claim the games are more watchable is just simply Bettman making up a statistic to support his own narrative, something he is guilty of on multiple occasions. If the digital ads continue to help revenues rise and increase the salary cap there is no reason to change anything, but I don't think you'll find any fan who says the ads make the game more enjoyable.

But this is Gary Bettman's league and we're all just watching it.
