Insider reveals how much the NHL salary cap will rise for 2023-24 season
There have been numerous rumors swirling about the potential salary cap for next season. Multiple reports have suggested the cap could rise nearly 4 million dollars next season. However it appears that will not be the case.
Today NHL Insider revealed that the NHL will only be raising the cap by $1,000,000 for next season.
With NHL free agency on the horizon, it's believed the 2023-24 salary cap ceiling will be set at $83.5M -- an indication the NHL and NHLPA won't negotiate a higher increase than the $1M called for in their MOU.
The NHLPA was expected to try and negotiate an additional cap increase, but that apparently won't be the case. New NHLPA Head Marty Walsh said the players would certainly be open to an increase in the cap, but would not be willing to make an adjustments to their escrow payments.
The salary cap has been frozen since the COVID-19 pandemic caused the league to see revenues drop. The players have been paying back the league over a billion dollars in escrow payments since the cap was frozen. This amount is expected to be paid back by the end of next season.
