The Toronto Maple Leafs have a talented forward group, there's no doubt about that, with so much talent up front, that means they all expect to be paid. The problem with the expectation to be paid is there's not enough money to go around. With Matthews having just signed a massive extension, John Tavares still at 11M through next season and Mitch Marner making nearly 11M, Nylander has always been the odd man out. Due for a big raise because of not only his early work this season, but his consistency since signing the contract, Nylander might've priced himself out of Toronto.
Now according to First Take on TSN who has Darren Dreger on recently, Nylander's ask on his next contract has just gone through the roof; take a look.
Nylander just entering his prime at 27, has 42 points in 30 games with the Leafs this season including 15 goals and 27 assists.
If Dreger is right and he's pushed himself into the 11 million dollar range per season, he'll most definitely have to test the free agent market as the Leafs will not be able to afford paying him even if the cap goes up.
For right now, it's a good problem to have if you're the Leafs, but beyond this season, it seems like nightmare fuel for Brad Treliving and company.
