Joe Sakic makes the decision to cut former top 5 pick from the team
The Colorado Avalanche are looking to do everything possible to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. That means making some difficult roster decisions and looking at unique ways to find value adds to their roster. Before training camp started the Avalanche decided they were willing to give former 3rd overall pick, Alex Galchenyuk a professional tryout. This was an opportunity for Galchenyuk to try and sign on with a Cup contender, after spending a year with the Arizona Coyotes.
Last season while playing for the Coyotes, Galchenyuk score 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points. Galchenyuk has been under contract with 7 different teams since being drafted 3rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens. Galchenyuk was hopeful that he'd be able to find a home in the Avalanche's bottom 6, but today he learned that wouldn't be happening.
This morning Galchenyuk was alerted by President of Hockey Operations, Joe Sakic, that he had not made the team and that he was being released from his professional tryout.
Alex Galchenyuk has been released from his PTO. Jacob MacDonald now has his locker in the main room. This release could pose a real challenge for Galchenyuk as he looks to find another contract. Hopefully he can find a role with a team that will help him prolong his NHL career.
