Johnny Gaudreau is coming off of a career year with the Calgary Flames. During the 2021-2022 season, Gaudreau was a majour reason the Flames finished first in the Pacific Division. He put up 115 points in the regular season, which was tied for second place. He was also considered by most, a Hart Trophy candidate. But like many players, Gaudreau had his best season in the final year of his current contract and will be an unrestricted free agent this off-season. This is if he and the Flames don't come to an agreement before the July 13th deadline.
There have been a lot of rumours swirling around that Gaudreau would like to play in the Eastern Conference next season, specifically the Metropolitan Division. Gaudreau grew up in Salem, New Jersey, which is only 42 miles from Philadelphia. It has been talked about all season that he may want to play for his hometown team the Philadelphia Flyers. One local reporter, Giana Han, believes that Gaudreau's asking price would be between $9million and $10million per season.
Gaudreau is a winger, so that type of cap hit for a player like him is rare. Other wingers making that type of money are Kirill Kaprizov, Mikko Rantanen, Mark Stone and Nikita Kucherov to name a few. Johnny Gaudreau isn't seen on the level of those players, although he did outscore them this season. But how much stock can you put into one season? Gaudreau and his agent are hoping that's the only thing teams will look at when offering him a contract.
