Last night was a historical night for Pittsburgh Penguins' star Evgeni Malkin. During tonight's Pittsburgh Penguins' game vs the Detroit Red Wings, Malkin earned the 696th assist of his career, this assist tied him with fellow Russian and Detroit Red Wings' legend Sergei Fedorov.
So what is the significance of this assist? This assist ties Malkin with Federov for the all-time lead in assists by a Russian born player.
Malkin has shared in the past that he was a huge Fedorov fan growing up. So tying his boyhood hero likely makes this record extra special.
Malkin also went on to score his first hattrick since January 30th 2018, in a 11-2 defeat of the Red Wings. This was the Penguins' first 10 goal game since 1995 during the Mario Lemieux era.
