Matthew Knies without a doubt is the Toronto Maple Leafs top prospect. Knies was drafted in the 2nd round, 57th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. Knies quickly began to impress as a member of the University of Minnesota, last season he produced 33 points in 33 games.

Not only did Knies impress at U of M, but he also went onto represent Team USA at the Winter Olympics. Knies also produced a goal and an assist in 4 games at the Olympics.

After Knies University season ended, Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs brass tried to convince Knies to turn pro, but he declined. Many wondered why Knies would turn this down, but now at Leafs Development Camp he's shed some light on his decision.

I thought would develop a lot more. don't think was ready to make the step yet. Off the ice and on the ice don't think was mature enough, as a player, as a person. think there was more to go into that. I'm fortunate to be here and just really really happy.

A lot of thought went into it. I talked to my family and all of my friends. had people in my ear telling me what to do. listened to them and took everyone's advice. But it came down to my decision. just needed one more year to become a better player. know it's a big step to make it to the NHL so I'm trying to make it a much smoother transition. think l'm going to develop a lot next year and hopefully can join again this season.

Knies clearly has a successful NHL career in mind and unlike some of the other Maple Leafs he's not simply thinking of a quick payday.
