Yesterday news broke that Brandon Sutter was giving up on his NHL comeback. Yesterday the Edmonton Oilers made the announcement that they were releasing Brandon Sutter from his professional tryout. Immediately after the news broke that Sutter was announcing his retirement from professional hockey.

Sutter hadn't played a game since the 2020-21 season, so it was always going to be a long shot for him to make the team. During his time with the Vancouver Canucks, Sutter contracted a variant of COVID-19 and became extremely ill. The symptoms lingered and Sutter has been doing with long COVID ever since.

After the announcement that Sutter had been released from his PTO many assumed it was the choice of the Oilers. Unfortunately that is not the case and today the truth of the matter was revealed by an Edmonton Oilers Insider.

According to Mark Spector, it was actually Sutter who called an end to his NHL return.

Brandon Sutter called a meeting Sunday in Seattle with Oilers GM Ken Holland, head coach Jay Woodcroft and trainer TD Forss, to tell them he could not go on with his PTO.
Holland: "He had some health concerns and he just felt that he was going to end his career."
Long Covid...

After two weeks of training camp Sutter appeared poised to make the Oilers opening night lineup. Instead he is forced to hang up his skates for the final time due to the lasting impact of his illness.
