NHL Set to Make Historic Increase in Salary Cap Next Season
This is certainly something players will love to hear. Gary Bettman, Comissioner of the NHL, appeared at a league Board of Governors meeting today, and told them the salary cap will be going up in 2024-25, and the increase could be one of the biggest since the cap system was implemented in the NHL.
"Gary Bettman after Board of Governors meeting says he told owners the very preliminary revenue projections suggests a salary cap bump to between $87 M and $88 M for 2024-25 next year" - Pierre LeBrun, TSN
If the cap goes to at least $87.5 million next season, that would be a $4 million increase over the current limit. That marks the single largest, one-time increase for the NHL's salary ceiling since 2019, when it went up by $4.5 million. Should it go to $88 million, it would be tied for the biggest one since 2014-15.
Increases have been small over the last couple of seasons, with the league citing the lack of revenue during COVID. While still not massive, the extra money will be appreciated by GMs who have star players needing new contracts.
"From NHL BoG: Commissioner Gary Bettman says 'very preliminary' estimate for cap next year is between $87-$88M. He stresses it is very preliminary." Elliotte Friedman, Sportsnet
