Late last year the NHL lost legendary player, Borje Salming after he lost his long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The disease is currently without a cure and medications are only able to slow down the impact of the disease. Calgary Flames' Assistant General Manager, is also currently battling ALS.

Unfortunately today the Ottawa Senators made the announcement that Assistant Coach Bob Jones has been diagnosed with the disease. Today, General Manager, Pierre Dorion issued the following statement:

"A devoted member of our family, Bob Jones, has been diagnosed with ALS," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "Bob and his family's wishes are to take the courageous step of making his condition public in an effort to drive ALS awareness as he fights this disease."

"We have been working internally with Bob and his family as he takes on this challenge; while Bob will continue with his coaching duties, he has the full support of the organization to take any time he needs away from the club during the season to concentrate on his health and his family."

As Bob shares his diagnosis publicly, one of the Jones' family's goals is to help raise awareness for ALS research. The family has asked that those considering contributions consider both the ALS Society of Canada and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Jones, who is in his 4th season with the Senators, is a former Detroit Red Wings draft pick. He was selected in the 9th round, 179th overall in the 1989 Draft pick. Jones has coached at different levels for the last 20 years and has been an integral part in the development of many young players.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jones and his family as he begins his battle with this terrible disease.
