New team tops Forbes' NHL franchise valuation list for 2023
With only a couple of weeks left in the year, Forbes has decided to share their 2023 valuation list of the 32 National Hockey League franchises, with a new team leading the way.
For years now, the New York Rangers have topped Forbes' list, but in 2023, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in first place, currently being valued at $2.8 billion USD, a 40% increase over 2022.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs are the most valuable team in the National Hockey League for the first time since 2014. Even though they have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967, Forbes values the Maple Leafs at $2.8 billion, $150 million more than the New York Rangers ($2.65 billion), who held the top spot for eight straight years. The Montreal Canadiens are the NHL's third-most-valuable team, worth $2.3 billion."
The New York Rangers dropped down to second place, despite a 20% increase in value compared to 2022 and are now listed at $2.65 billion USD. The Montreal Canadiens ($2.3 billion), Los Angeles Kings ($2 billion) and Boston Bruins ($1.9 billion) round out the top-five.
Also inside the top-ten on Forbes' list are - Chicago Blackhawks ($1.87 billion), Edmonton Oilers ($1.85 billion), Philadelphia Flyers ($1.65 billion), Washington Capitals ($1.6 billion), New York Islanders ($1.55 billion).
The Arizona Coyotes, who are still looking for a permanent home in the state, are the lowest valued team in the National Hockey League, according to Forbes, and are currently sitting at $500 million USD.
