Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine has take to instagram to talk openly about why he's entering the NHL/NHLPA Assistance Program
After the Columbus Blue Jackets announced earlier today that Patrik Laine was taking time off from the game of hockey, as well as entering the NHL/NHLPA Assistance Program, Laine himself has taken to social media to address why.
Only General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen was quoted in the original release, saying the 25-year-old had his full support.
A few hours later, Laine took to Instagram to speak directly to fans.
"Dear fans and supporters,
I wanted to take a moment to address my need to step away from the game for a while. After careful consideration and discussions with my support network and the team, I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well-being. Hockey has been my passion and my life, but I have come to realize that in order to perform at my best, I need to take this time to focus
on myself."
Laine clarified that he fully intends to return to the NHL as soon as he's ready.
"I am grateful for the understanding and support of my team, the league, and our fans during this time. I look forward to returning to the ice with a clear mind and renewed energy. Thank you for respecting my privacy during this time and for your continued support."
With love,
Patty
Laine broke into the league as the 2nd overall pick in 2016 with the Winnipeg Jets. His first four seasons showed potential for a superstar in the making, with him scoring 44 goals in his sophomore year. His pace has slowed since then. Laine played 17 games in 2023-24, netting 5 goals and 3 assists. His last game came against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 14, 2023, where he scored a goal. However, Laine suffered a fractured clavicle in the 6-5 overtime win for the Jackets, and hasn't played since.
