Prominent hockey agent lashes out at Canadian government on behalf of clients after recent government rule changes
Dan Milstein, a hockey agent whose client list includes some very recognizable names from the NHL, is calling out the Canadian government. Milstein is unhappy with recent legislation dealing with buying homes in Canada, and called a recent amendment to the new law 'worthless.'
The vast majority of Milstein's client list includes Russian born players. In an attempt to curb the sky-rocketing costs of purchasing a home in Canada, the federal government recently banned non-Canadians from buying homes in the country as many of them were sitting empty while driving up prices. However, recognizing that those in the country on work permits were being punished by the legislation, the Government of Canada amended it to allow more of those people to purchase homes. That still wasn't enough for Milstein.
"Worthless Amendment while the US & others can buy homes in Canada, politicians didn't mention that there is still 25% provincial tax on purchase price. I would never suggest any of my clients playing or wanting to play in Canada pay 25% over asking price."
Milstein was forced to defend his position when someone replied that it was hard to feel sympathy for someone forced to rent a home instead of buying it while making $7 million a year.
"Players earning $7 (million) per year pay close to $4 (million) in taxes for roads, schools and Canadian infrastructure. Don't blame athletes, blame the officials that can't balance the budget and uncontrollably spend your hard earned money."
While there are higher taxes in Canada then most US states, this has been addressed before. There are ways for players to shelter their money while in Canada to get close, or even equal to what a player living in America would make.
Milstein's client list includes names like Nikita Kucherov, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Ilya Sorokin, Ilya Mikheyev, Andrei Kuzmenko, Alexander Romanov, and several other Russian-born NHL players. The only non-Russian player on his client list is Canadian Evander Kane.
