With just over a month to go before the a new NHL season begins there could still be another blockbuster trade in the works. This comes after Rangers prospect Nils Lundkvist informed the Ranger's General Manager, Chris Drury that he won't be reporting to the Rangers training camp. Not only is Nils not coming to camp he has also requested a trade.
The news was broken by New York Rangers Insider Larry Brooks who had this to say:
Former 28th overall selection Nils Lundkvist has reportedly informed the team that he will not report to training camp later this month and would like a fresh start with a new NHL team.
From Brooks' latest report for The New York Post:
The Rangers are engaged in an accelerated effort to trade Nils Lundkvist after being notified that the 22-year-old Swedish defenseman is unlikely to report to camp in the absence of a deal, The Post has been told by multiple sources.
The Post has learned that General Manager Chris Drury has been working with Lundkvist's agent, Claude Lemieux to try to accomodate the request of the young 22-year-old Swedish defenceman.
Lundkvist has only seen a limited amount of time with the Rangers. In 25 games he has 1 goal and 3 assist.
More from Brooks on what the Rangers are looking for in return:
At the same time, though, the Blueshirts are seeking a semblance of equal value in return for Lundkvist, the slick, puck-moving, offense-oriented defenseman who is generously listed at 5-10, 187 pounds.
The Blueshirts, though, could certainly use a young, top-nine-type center who might grow with the organization. That is believed to be Drury's target as they deal with this latest situation involving a young European unhappy with his plight.
Brooks went onto suggest a potential trade with the Canucks. Chris Drury has already shown interest in acquiring the services of JT Miller, who is rumored to be on the trade block. Brooks offered up the idea of trading Lundkvist and additional assets for JT Miller.
With a deadline nearing for the Canucks, the addition of a high end prospect like Lundqvist could make the Canucks definitely consider an offer.
