It's no secret that the officiating in hockey, especially the National Hockey League could use some work. It seems like game after game, there's always an issue and it hurts the on ice product. Last night was no exception.
The Detroit Red Wings faced off against the Seattle Kraken and the officiating was brutal, but it culminated when Red Wings defender Ben Chiarot is called for a helmet violation, but the officials don't call a penalty when a Kraken player blatantly throws his stick, disrupting a clear one-timer; take a look.
Referee calls Chiarot for a helmet violation but doesn't call a Kraken thrown stick (that interfered with a pass, preventing an open one-timer) - then Seattle went down the ice and scored.
Absolutely brutal officiating. #LGRW
To make matters worse, seconds after the play is disrupted by the thrown stick, the Kraken get breakaway and score. Leaving Alex DeBrincat beside himself and rightfully so.
Hockey is the greatest game on the planet, but when things like the on ice officiating get in the way of the product you're putting on the ice, it becomes nearly unwatchable. There's always been a little bias in officiating, but now, it's way past the point of being ridiculous.
Officials should call the game by the book, not pick and choose between which obvious penalties to call. The on ice officiating performances across the league make the NHL nearly unwatchable. If you want to grow the game, the first step is fixing the officiating.
