Referee gives one of the strangest explanations as to why a penalty isn't called
Referees are human and sometimes they get things wrong. But I'm not sure I can remember a referee giving this kind of explanation before. This caps off what has been a questionable week of officiating at best.
During last night's game between the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars, Mason Marchment delivers a high stick to the face of Josh Manson. Manson immediately fell to the ice and play was stopped. The Avalanche were expecting a penalty to be called, but somehow the referees on the ice missed the play.
After the stoppage the referee skated to center ice and gave the following puzzling explanation.
The play was killed due to an injury. There is no injury, no penalty.
Obviously this call left fans and the Avalanche bench flabbergasted. But what the referee was trying to share was that there was no penalty called on the initial play, and therefore due to a lack of injury the referees are unable to award one after the fact.
Meaning, while this was the right call the explanation left a lot to be desired.
