Three NHL cities on the verge of potentially getting another professional team
The NHL has made it clear that in the near future they'll be looking to potentially expand the league to upwards of 34 teams. However, it's another professional hockey league who is apparently working hard to expand their league.
The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) is the top women's professional hockey league in North America. The league, previously known as the National Women's Hockey League, is comprised of 7 teams across North America. PHF Commission Reagan Carey had the following to say about expansion during a recent podcast appearance.
We have to be responsible but also continue to move quickly, and we did that with Montreal. It all comes down to the right people, and the right time, and getting that community in the right place.
Carey also shared that last summer he spent time approaching potential owners, while now, perspective owners are contacting Carey about joining the league. This is an extremely positive progression for the league.
Last summer the league added its 7th time, the Montreal Force, and now appears poised to add up to 3 additional teams this year.
The growth of women's professional hockey is happening at an exponential pace and possible growth into Chicago, Washington and Ottawa will only help to grow the game. We hope only good things for the PHF and the league's growth.
