With a team that is stacked with talent, one would think that on paper, this team is built to compete for the Stanley Cup. But, year over year, they've yet to prove that they don't deserve to win.
According to Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet, the Maple Leafs are looking to sign Zach Aston-Reese and get that much needed depth and grit that they've been needing for the playoffs.
Friedman on 32TP says he thinks the Leafs want to sign Aston-Reese. They don't have a lot of roster space or room to add further bodies, EF believes it's possible they might try to move one of their surplus forwards for a d-man that is waiver exempt or already cleared waivers NHL Watcher (@NHL_Watcher) October 3, 2022
Zach Aston-Reese signed a PTO this summer with the Maple Leafs in hopes of getting a crack at making the roster. The only issue the Maple Leafs have at the moment remains their cap space and roster size. Currently, they have a full roster of 23 players signed for this year and are over the cap by $2,900,000. If the Maple Leafs are to sign him, they are going to need to move some players out of Toronto just to make room for Aston-Reese.
