In the off-season the Toronto Maple Leafs do what they tend to do under the Kyle Dubas regime and went to the bargain bin signing depth forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a 1 year 1 million dollar contract.

Things didn't exactly go as planned for Aube-Kubel with the Leafs early in the season. In fact, yesterday, they placed him on waivers. Only to be picked up by the Washington Capitals today as per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman .

Aube-Kubel, 26, has no points in 6 games played this season with the Leafs after being added as a depth option, he really didn't bring too much to the team at all.

Is this another failure by Dubas and co as they try to navigate being cap strapped while trying to remain competitive?

Maybe, but at 1M in salary it was a low cost bet that just turned sour really, really early. The thing that I struggle with is Dubas strikes out on these signings far too often. Aside from Bunting, Samsonov and Giordano, none of them have really turned out too well. In the case of Samsonov, it may even be too early to tell
