With free agency in full swing it appears the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins couldn't find what they were looking for on the open market and have made a trade swapping defenders.
According to Kevin Weekes of ESPN and the NHL Network, the Penguins have acquired defender Ty Smith and a 2023 third round pick in exchange for another defensemen in John Marino.
Smith, 22, had 5 goals and 15 assists for 20 points last season with the Devils in 66 games.
Marino, 25, on the other hand had 1 goal and 24 assists for 25 points in 81 games played with Pittsburg last season.
It had been widely reported the Penguins were looking to clear cap space and moving Marino for Smith gives them just over $3,000,000 in cap space. It will be interesting to see what Ron Hextall and company intend to do with that space, but they still need to sign restricted free agent Kasperi Kapanen.
