Agents have begun to warn their clients about signing in Vegas without full trade protection. Vegas has developed a reputation for treating players as if they're disposable. This began when the Knights traded Marc-Andre Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks without even speaking to him before the fact.
Now it appears the Golden Knights are once again going to live up to that reputation. According to Owen Krepps the Golden Knights have considered moving on from both Alec Martinez or Laurent Brossoit to create cap space.
While moving in from Brossoit makes sense given the Knight's goaltending situation, moving on from Martinez is a bit different. Martinez signed a 3 year deal in Vegas in July of 2022, paying him $5,250,000 per season. This was significantly less money compared to what Martinez likely would have received on the open market.
Martinez does have limited trade protection that will allow him to dictate where he goes should he be traded. But this is another example of the Golden Knights salary cap management focusing on right now and not thinking long-term.
