The Western Hockey League (WHL), one of three major junior leagues in Canada, has a new team today. It's an American one, and it came at the expense of a Canadian team.

Winnipeg Ice

The Winnipeg Ice are no more. After multiple failed attempts at a new arena, a promise made when the team was moved from Cranbrook, BC, to Winnipeg, it was sold today to business interests that moved the team to Wenatchee, Seattle. The Ice are now the Wenatchee Wild, and will play in the WHL next season.

Some Great Years

The Ice were a very good team. For their first two seasons in the WHL, there were no playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021-22, Winnipeg went to the Conference Final before being eliminated. This year, they went all the way to the Final.

It's unfortunate that the failed promise of a new arena led to the team's demise. In the meantime, interest in hockey in Washington state appears to be growing.
