On the wing Flames have Jonathan Huberdeau who is a superstar. Andrew Mangiapane is a proven scorer in the league. Tyler Toffoli and Blake Coleman both have strong track records of excellent two-way play. They could use a little more scoring punch from the wing.
Calgary currently has $2,136,667 available in cap space.
Flames are looking at the UFA market to upgrade the forward position. Reports have Calgary interested in Evan Rodrigues and Sonny Milano
Rodrigues is an undrafted 29-year-old right-shot Canadian forward who can play all three forward positions. He is coming off his best statistical season scoring 19 goals, 24 assists for 43 points in 82 games.
An issue that has plagued Rodrigues his whole career has been his inconsistency when scoring at the NHL level. Rodrigues set a career-high in points with the Penguins last season but did so with multiple scoring droughts. He had two eight-game scoreless streaks.
Milano's puck skills and overall creativity make him an intriguing option. He is coming off his career best season in 2021-2022. In 66 games Milano scored 14 goals and 34 points.
It looked like Milano had finally found a home in the NHL, but earlier this summer the Ducks made a surprising move. They chose not to issue Milano a qualifying offer and let him hit unrestricted free agency, where he remains today.
Milano can stick with talented players and help finish their plays. He can dazzle with his creativity and help drive offense. But he can also hurt his team away from the puck and struggle to make any sort of impact when he's not at his best.
No NHL player is perfect, and these two definitely have warts in their game, but both could be effective options for the Flames going forward.
