Zdeno Chara expected to announce his retirement
Zdeno Chara has had a Hall of Fame worthy career, and he will likely be voted into the Hall of Fame as a first ballot candidate. Chara is expected in the coming weeks to announce his official retirement from the NHL.
Chara's career began when he was drafted 56th overall in 1996 by the New York Islanders. Chara went onto play 1680 career games, scoring 209 goals and adding 471 assists for 680 points. Chara was also a defensive specialist over his career finishing as a plus 301.
This past season Chara passed Chris Chelios for the most games played by an NHL defenseman. Chara was a 6-time All-Star, won the Norris Trophy in 2009 and ultimately won the Stanley Cup in 2011.
If Chara retires it will mark the end of a legendary career. It will also mark the final player in the league who say the Maple Leafs make the second round of the playoffs.
