Today marks the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of hockey player and former NHLer Adam Johnson. While police have provided several updates into their investigation into his death during a game in England, there are still many unanswered questions, including why the suspect in the case has been given bail multiple times.
There have never been any formal charges laid in the investigation which, according to police, is ongoing despite the fact that we're 12 months removed from the incident. Bail has been granted five times for the suspect, with the current one due to run out on Nov. 11, 2024. In an interview with The Athletic, law professor Mark Jones said the case is unique is almost every way, and that likely explains why police are taking their time.
Adam Johnson death absolutely stunned the entire hockey world. It wasn't just that it happened, it was how it happened and how everything played out on the ice following Johnson's injury. Tributes came from everywhere for the 29-year-old forward, who played 13 games in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as several more in the AHL.
If police decide not to release another update before the next bail hearing, we'll have to wait until Nov 11 to find out what is happening with the suspect. Should police decide that charges are possible once the investigation is completed, evidence would be sent to crown prosecutors, who would then decide whether there was enough of it to officially charge the suspect. In the meantime, the hockey world continues to wait for further news.
