Amazon reportedly working on deal with Rogers to broadcast games
The way you watch Monday Night Hockey in Canada next season may be changing as a Amazon is making a push to carry the games.
Back in late 2013, Rogers Communications agreed to a 12-year, $5.2 billion deal with the National Hockey League to become the official broadcaster in Canada and so far, for the company, it hasn't gone as they'd hope and they're reportedly losing money.
With that said, once the deal is over in 2026, it seems unlikely that Rogers will look to renew their contract with the NHL, leaving TSN or potentially a streaming service as the only options for the league to consider as the official broadcaster in Canada.
In order to recoup some of their losses, it appears that Rogers is working on a deal with Amazon to sell one of the broadcasters biggest productions - Monday Night Hockey. The deal, if it goes through, would see the Monday Night Hockey games shift from Sportsnet to Amazon Prime Video for the final two years of Rogers' contract with the NHL in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
"As anticipation builds for this years playoffs, there is news brewing about the upcoming NHL season, whispers in the sports world hint at a potential game-changing move: Amazon's potential takeover of the entire Monday night package from Rogers. While details remain scarce, the murmurs suggest that Rogers, burdened by the weight of the deal, may be looking to offload the Monday night games to the Seattle-based tech giant." Jonah of YYZ Sports Media said.
It'll be interesting to see if this deal goes through as it could be a precursor to what the hockey broadcasting landscape may look like in Canada beyond 2026. Moving away from traditional media such as Sportsnet and TSN is a likely possibility, with streaming becoming more and more popular in recent years.
