Veteran forward Jesper Fast will not play for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2024-25 according to an announcement from the team, which says he underwent surgery
A tough blow for the Carolina Hurricanes and one of their players just before training camp gets underway for the 2024-25 NHL season. The team has announced veteran Jesper Fast is not expected to play.
In a news release, the Hurricanes state Jesper Fast has undergone neck surgery. It was required after an injury suffered in the final game of the 2023-24 regular season against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Fast did not play in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs with Carolina at all.
"Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Jesper Fast underwent neck surgery on August 6. Fast is not expected to play during the 2024-25 NHL season.
Fast, 32, scored six goals and added 13 assists (19 points) in 73 games during the 2023-34 season with Carolina. The Nassjo, Sweden, native ranked sixth on the team in hits (79) and played in his 700th career NHL game on April 9 against the Boston Bruins."
The game against the Blue Jackets was largely meaningless for the Hurricanes as they had already cemented their spot in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It appeared fairly minor at first, until Canes coach Rod Brind'Amour revealed to reporters that Fast was done for the entire postseason just a couple of games into it.
While never an offensive star, Jesper Fast has been a solid and reliable two-way player for the Carolina Hurricanes for the past four NHL seasons. Fast joined the Canes as a free agent in 2020, after being drafted by, and playing for the New York Rangers since 2014.
