A beloved young hockey player has passed away at just 16 years of age, prompting tributes from the hockey community all over North America

While many across North America are still nursing a turkey hangover, or getting ready to try to find some huge deals, the hockey community in Minnesota and all over Canada and US is in mourning.

The hockey community is mourning the loss of Chaplin Park teen Max Akerson, who passed away from liver cancer earlier this week.

Akerson's mother made the announcement on a social media account with a heart-wrenching post.

"Today at 10:20 a.m. Max tried to get out of bed and collapsed in his dad's arms. He took his last breath with his parents' hands on him. He is free from pain and suffering. He fought so long and hard. He did not let cancer win. He lived every day."

Max was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2021. He made a comeback after surgery and aggressive treatment, but the disease sadly returned. His death Tuesday came just three days after his 16th birthday.

Tributes have poured in from the local hockey community and beyond as everyone remembers the young goaltender with so much potential and so much life to live.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Max Akerson. The young goaltender's legacy and spirit will live on in the community for a long time.

There is a campaign to ensure sticks are out for Max Akerson across the US and Canada over the next few days. If you're able, please participate.
