The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers have to be a little bit worried considering their number one goaltenders have not re-signed with their respective teams yet. Given the fact that the regular season is right around the corner. For Boston, they're worried about Jeremy Swayman continuing to hold out as the restricted free agent and the Bruins negotiate. The New York Rangers are worried about Shesterkin leaving the team in free agency.
Now according to insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN, the reason both goaltenders are holding out of reaching a new deal with their respective teams is because in the case of Shesterkin, he wants to reset the goalie market and make more money than any goaltender ever has. However in the case of Swaymak, he is looking for an 8 year deal and appears to not want to settle for anything less.
Shesterkin, 28, had a down year by his standards last season, even though his numbers were rather solid. In 55 games, Shesterkin compiled a record of 36-17-2 with a .912 save percentage and a 2.58 goals against average to go along with 4 shutouts. A decent season by most standards, but a huge drop off for him statistically.
Swayman , 25, played in 44 games for the Bruins last season, sporting a record of 25-10-8 with a .916 save percentage and a 2.53 goals against average. He also added 3 shutouts along the way.
Both goaltenders have their reasons for their respective holdouts', but at this point in time, I would be more inclined to give Swayman the term he wants over Shesterkin and his outlandish contract demands. Not only is Swayman younger he had a better season last year of the two.
This will be interesting to watch as the regular season draws closer and closer with every passing day for now it appears to just be a waiting game.
