An insider has revealed the real reason why Todd McLellan wasn't named the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets and it's not exactly what you think.

Todd McLellan had been rumoured to be the next head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets for quite some time now. Yesterday a deal that would've seen him take the role fell through because the Los Angeles Kings were only willing to eat a certain amount of his salary for next season.

Now, according to Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch, we know exactly why and just how much of McLellan's salary the Kings were willing to eat.

Refreshing this one. Told that #LAKings were willing to eat up to $2 million of McLellan's remaining $5.5 million for '24-25, leaving #CBJ to pay $3.5 million next season plus a different (unknown annual salary) for additional years ->

McLellan is still under contract from the Los Angeles Kings despite the fact that he was let go therefore the blue jackets and Kings needed to come to an agreement to cover his salary for next year as well as the Jackets needed to be willing to give him more money for additional years. According to Hedger, The Los Angeles Kings were willing to eat up to $2 million of McLellan's 5.5 million next season leaving the Blue Jackets to pay 3.5 of his salary. It seems they weren't willing to do that.

In the end, it comes down to the Columbus Blue Jackets, not wanting to pay McLellan a salary of $3.5 million next year, which they deemed too high for their coach.
