The National Hockey League is entering it's 107th season of play in 2024-25 and a new team is set to participate - Utah HC. With the addition of Utah Hockey Club and the Arizona Coyotes now being dissolved, travel plans for teams around the league will be altered.
In a post on social media recently, @TJStats shared data that shows how far each team will travel next season and shows a staggering difference between the team with the most miles ahead of themselves and the team with the least.
Before sharing, it's worth noting that it's unclear if this data includes the travel to and from Europe to start the season for the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils. If it doesn't, you can add on 8,334 miles for the Buffalo Sabres and 8,178 miles for the New Jersey Devils to the data below.
Coming in at first with the most distance travelling next season is the Dallas Stars with 56,700 miles, 5,600 more than the second-place Florida Panthers. Anaheim (51,000 miles), Edmonton (50,000) and Utah (48,700) round out the top-five.
As for the least amount of distance travelling next season, that goes to Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at 31,700 miles, 1,100 less than the Ottawa Senators at 31st with 32,800 miles. Rounding out the bottom-five are the Columbus Blue Jackets (30th - 33,400), New York Rangers (29th - 35,300) and Philadelphia Flyers (28th - 35,500).
With the Dallas Stars travelling 5,600 miles more than the team in second, Florida, it'll be interesting to see how it affects them later in the season when wear and tear take hold. After losing in the Western Conference Final two seasons in a row, the Stars have their sights on reaching their first Stanley Cup Final since 2020 and are hoping to hoist hockey's greatest trophy for the first time since 1999.
