Details on a new home for the NHL's Calgary Flames have been released, with a first look at what the new arena will look like, and what it will be called
A replacement for Calgary's Saddledome is coming, and we now have our first look at the design for the new Flames' home and who has the naming rights. The current Scotia Saddledome is being replaced by Scotia Place, which will be the centerpiece of an entirely new neighbourhood for downtown Calgary.
In a news release, the City of Calgary explained the idea behind the design for the new arena.
"The design is influenced by the ancestral and historical land of Indigenous peoples and the culturally significant site that embodies our shared purpose to gather. It brings together Indigenous cultural perspectives with Calgary's and the region's natural beauty, reflecting the four elements of nature fire, ice, land and air.
A striking feature of the building is the central structure with a textured flame motif that emulates a home fire, which is further amplified when it is lit at night."
The building is expected to open in the fall of 2027. It will seat around 19,000 fans during a hockey game, and the City is promising it will be a gathering place for all.
"The worst kept secret in Calgary but the new event centre will be named Scotia Place.
Not to be confused with the Scotia Place building in Edmonton, Scotia Centre building here in Calgary, Scotiabank Arena in Toronto or Scotiabank Centre in Halifax."
The Saddledome, which will eventually be torn down, was built in 1983 as a home for the Calgary Flames. In recent years, it became clear the building needed major repairs, with those in charge deciding it would be easier to replace the arena.
