NHL Department of Player Safety Punishes Garnet Hathaway for Dirty Elbow in Last Night's Game

Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers has received supplemental discipline from the NHL's Department of Player Safety after an elbow on Joel Eriksson Ek

The NHL's Department of Players Safety has decided to lay down the law on Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers. Hathaway has been punished for an incident involving Joel Eriksson Ek of the Minnesota Wild that teammate Marcus Foligno felt was a cheap shot.

The elbow by Garnet Hathaway came in the second period. He recieved a two-minute minor for roughing, with Philadelphia killing off the ensuing powerplay by the Minnesota Wild.

Garnet Hathaway has been fined $5000 for the Elbow of Joel Eriksson Ek, which is the maximum allowed under the current NHL collective bargaining agreement.

"Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for elbowing Minnesota Wild forward Joel Eriksson Ek during NHL Game No. 123 in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 26, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today."

Marcus Foligno of the Minnesota Wild was furious following the game, letting out his anger on Hathaway and his style of play. Foligno said Hathaway has to play that way in order to stay relevant in the NHL.

The anger from Marcus Foligno wasn't just about the elbow. Joel Eriksson Ek had just returned to the lineup after having surgery on his nose. Foligno indicated that he felt Garnet Hathaway was aware of this and targeted Eriksson Ek on purpose.
