The National Hockey League's new jersey supplier, Fanatics, saw their uniforms go on sale for the first time on Saturday to mixed reviews from fans.
As we've seen in the past with some of their fan gear (hats, sweaters, etc.), Fanatics' factories haven't done the best job at getting things right, to say the least. However, when it comes to their new jerseys for the National Hockey League, the quality appears to be very good, depending on which one you decide to purchase.
For the Fanatics era of NHL jerseys, you have three choices, four if you include practice jerseys. The first is called 'Breakaway', which is exactly the same as the Fanatics replica during the Adidas era. The fabric on this version of the uniform is the exact same, but some details look a bit gimmicky, to say the least including the logo on the front, which doesn't look nearly as good as other levels.
The next step up from the 'Breakaway' jersey is 'Premium', which is essentially just the same quality as the Adidas one solid in stores and online since 2017, with some teams still having stock available, for now.
For the first time in ten years, which would be the Reebok era, the National Hockey League and Fanatics are selling an 'Authentic Pro' jersey, which is the exact same uniform you'll be seeing your favourite team and player wear on the ice. The cost for this jersey is something we've never seen, but given that it's what the players wear and that it's made in Canada, it's sort of understandable. However, it comes at a price that's out of reach for the average fan.
These are the prices for the Fanatics NHL uniforms, blank without a name and number on the back:
Practice: $120 USD/$140 CAD.
Breakaway: $135 USD/$160 CAD.
Premium: $180 USD/$200 CAD.
Authentic Pro: $425 USD/$500 CAD.
When compared to the Adidas era with the Fanatics Breakaway uniforms they had, as well as their own, which are just the 'Premium' ones now, the prices aren't much different at all. The Breakaway uniforms in the Adidas era cost $150 CAD, while their own jerseys were $200 CAD, without a name and number on the back.
It's going to be interesting to see how many of the Authentic Pro uniforms Fanatics and the National Hockey League sell during their first year of availability. Given the high price point, it wouldn't be shocking if not many are sold by all 32 teams around the league.
