Last year the hockey world was shocked to find out that Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto had struck a deal with the NHL to receive a 41 game suspension. The suspension, the first of it's kind was in response to a violation of the league's gambling policy. At the time the league remained scarce with the details.
Questions immediately began to arise, what had Pinto done? Had he gambled on the NHL? Was he profiting from his own play or that of his teammates? The NHL and NHLPA made the decision to not release any of the details at the time.
Now, on a recent podcast appearance, Shane Pinto made the decision himself to release details. Pinto shared the following:
Well, it doesn't seem like this infraction was NHL related. The NHL has a clear guideline for all gambling related rules and it is clear that Pinto broke one of those rules. While the suspension may seem excessive it is of note that Pinto negotiated this deal through the NHLPA.
It's still amazing to see a league who makes millions of dollars each season off of gambling having such a strict policy, especially when it comes to betting on other sports. Only time will tell if Pinto is the only person to violate this rule or if we will see more and more players in the future breaking similar roles.
