While RCMP say they have a suspect, there has yet to be an arrest or charges in the case of a stolen Wayne Gretzky Canada Cup jersey worth a lot of money
There has been an update in the case of a Wayne Gretzky jersey that was stolen from a home of a former teammate in Sweden. RCMP say they have a suspect, but no arrest has been made just yet.
The jersey, which Gretzky wore at the 1984 Canada Cup and is estimated to be worth $400,000, was owned by former teammate and friend Kent Nilsson, who has a sizeable collection of his own sweaters, and ones from other players. Nilsson told Steve Simmonds of the Toronto Sun that a relative broke into his home and took it on order to get money for his addiction.
"He says he wasn't looking for hockey memorabilia as much as he was looking for a way to get high. The relative turned the jersey over to somebody - apparently for $500 - not having a clue of what it was really worth."
After months of looking, RCMP say they believe the sweater is in Fort McMurray, Alberta. There is a suspect, and they attempted to visit him at one point.
"They went to pick up the jersey and possibly arrest the man. The first time they went, though, they weren't allowed in.
When they came back with a search warrant, the office was open, but the jersey was gone."
Police say they are hoping that making the details public will move the investigation into the stolen sweater forward. Kent Nilsson said the cost of the jersey isn't why he wants it back. It's what it means to him.
The 1984 Canada Cup came to an end with Team Canada beating Team Sweden in the final. At the end of the game, Wayne Gretzky and Kent Nilsson spontaneously decided to exchange sweaters on the ice as keepsakes.
Wayne Gretzky told Steve Simmonds he'd gladly give his old teammate another one, but the only other one he had was donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
