The National Hockey League's free agent window has been open for just over a month now and so far, there haven't been any takers when it comes to former first-round pick Tony DeAngelo.
DeAngelo became an unrestricted free agent last month after the Carolina Hurricanes decided not re-sign him after a pretty disappointing season in terms of his production, which dropped off by 26% when compared to the previous year, which he spent with Philadelphia.
While there hasn't been any traction on getting a contract in the National Hockey League, DeAngelo may have his sights on heading overseas, potentially to the KHL in Russia.
According to Hockey News Hub on X, he's hearing that Tony DeAngelo will be joining SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL next season, but nothing is concrete on that front just yet.
If DeAngelo is able to agree to terms on a contract with SKA St. Petersburg, he'll join an already loaded roster which features Evgeny Kuznetsov, Ivan Demidov, Alexander Nikishin, Mikhail Grigorenko, Arseni Gritsyuk, Sergei Plotnikov, Sergei Tolchinsky and Borna Rendulic.
DeAngelo, 28, appeared in 31 games for the Carolina Hurricanes during the regular season in 2023-24 where he registered 11 points (three goals, eight assists), 24 penalty minutes and was a minus-seven. He went on to add two assists in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games, as the Hurricanes were eliminated in the second round by the New York Rangers.
We'll have to wait and see how this develops in the coming days and if SKA St. Petersburg is able to make room to add Tony DeAngelo to their roster. DeAngelo would be a solid piece for SKA St. Petersburg, from an offensive standpoint, and spending a year in the KHL might help him get back on track if he wants to return to the National Hockey League in the years ahead.
Update: According to Puck Empire , they spoke to Tony DeAngelo and he has denied this rumour
