After going all the way to the Stanley Cup final this past season before losing in seven games to the Florida Panthers, the Edmonton Oilers had made their fans proud, and gave them a reason to be hopeful for the future. A lot of that goodwill was destroyed this week when the team announced it had hired a new general manager in Stan Bowman, who was suspended from working for the NHL for a while for his role in the Kyle Beach scandal while he was working for the Chicago Blackhawks. Many have concerns, including legendary Edmonton Oiler Wayne Gretzky.
While Gretzky has yet to give his thoughts on the hire, he gave his thoughts on the whole Bowman/Blackhawks situation earlier this month while appearing on the NHL on TNT. The Great One said everything that happened should be cause for concern with parents of young hockey players hoping to make the NHL.
The Oilers' hiring of Bowman is somewhat puzzling. It led to Edmonton Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson making his X profile private, while the team was accused of intentionally dropping the news while sports reporters in Edmonton were taking part in an annual golf tournament, and others were on vacation.
Even if the Oilers believe Bowman has paid for his role in the Kyle Beach incident, why bother with the backlash? Surely there were candidates available who can do the job as good as, or possibly even better than Bowman. The entire situation seems like really poor judgement on the part of those in charge.
