The free agent period opens July 1st, but the Colorado Avalanche & Winnipeg Jets have announced they have locked up major pieces of their teams' long-term.

The Jets reportedly have agreed with pending UFA defenceman Dylan DeMelo to re-sign him to a four-year deal with an AAV of $4.9 million.

The veteran of 554 games played with the San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and most recently the Winnipeg Jets for the last five seasons has contributed with 17 goals along with 127 assists for 144 points. During that span, he has also racked up 265 penalty minutes.

The Colorado Avalanche announced that they have re-signed forward Casey Mittlestat to a three-year extension. The veteran forward who was acquired by the Avalanche from the Buffalo Sabres skated in 18 games for the Avalanche posting ten points with the club(4g/6a).

While it's still remarking early in the offseason, it seems as if teams are trying to get a head start on signing some of their free agents as it is anticipated that more deals such as the above will begin to trickle in leading up to the July 1st free agent signing window. The next seven or eight days will be some of the busiest offseason as teams try to determine their needs and what makes sense as to who comes in and who goes out.
