Insider provides full details on just how disrespectful the Kings were with Jonathan Quick during his trade
The Los Angeles Kings drafted Jonathan Quick 72nd overall during the 2005 NHL Draft. Quick made his NHL debut 3 years later, before becoming a regular in the Kings lineup in 2008-2009. Quick quickly identified himself as one of the best goalies in the league.
Quick was able to lead the Kings to Stanley Cups in both 2012 and 2014, almost singlehandedly in 2012. In 2012 Quick was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner and has been a mainstay in the lineup ever since. That was until the Kings traded Quick days before the NHL Trade Deadline to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
There is no denying over the years Quick's play had fallen off, but many expected him to complete the final year of his contract as a member of the Kings. However, with the regression of Cal Petersen, the Kings had no choice but to make a move in goal. The biggest problem though, was the way the Kings went about the trade.
According to sources, Quick was never even informed before news of the deal broke that his name was being included in trade rumors. Today on his 32 Thoughts Blog, Elliotte Friedman shared the following details.
It didn't go unnoticed that Columbus did right by Jonathan Quick. Don't want to make a big deal of it, but it's untrue that his inclusion in the Kings-Blue Jackets trade was reported before Quick was told. Los Angeles planned to inform him upon returning home from Winnipeg, but audibled when informed rumours of the deal were out there. Reaction was seismic among the players and their families. One said he understood why, from a hockey perspective, the Kings felt they had to make the move. But he didn't understand why Quick wasn't given more of a heads-up to prepare for the shock of leaving the only NHL home he wanted to know.
Moves like this go a very long way to upsetting players and creating issues within locker rooms. Quick, who was very well liked, was eventually traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, but moves like this will be a stain on the reputation of General Manager, Rob Blake.
As mentioned, this deal makes sense from a hockey perspective, and was a move the Kings had to make. But, is the way they went about it, the right way? Definitely not. Hopefully this is a lesson Blake can learn from, because players and agents always take note of moves like this.
