New York Islanders veteran forward Brock Nelson was officially traded today.

Brock Nelson has been a mainstay for the New York Islanders for over a decade.

The 33-year-old first made his debut with the team during the 2013-14 season when he scored 26 points in 72 games.

Since then he has gone on to appear in 901 regular-season games with the franchise, mustering 295 goals and 574 points.

He's also suited up in 78 playoff games for the team, recording 27 goals and 50 points in the process.

Unfortunately for Islanders fans, it appears as though he has played his last game with the franchise.

That game came last night, a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. After the game, Nelson was visibly emotional as he thanked the fans, anticipating that it could be his final chance to do so wearing an Islanders jersey.

Now it has been revealed that he is, in fact, being traded by the team ahead of tomorrow's trade deadline.

NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that the Islanders offered the veteran a three-year contract extension, but Nelson turned it down, instead hoping for more success elsewhere.

He added that many teams, more than seven to be specific, were in on him at the last minute.

Just moments ago, the deal was confirmed as Nelson was sent to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Avs prospect Calum Ritchie, a first-round selection in the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft, a conditional third-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, and defenseman Oliver Kylington.

Nelson was a part of several playoff teams for the Islanders throughout his career, participating in seven series victories, but never getting further than the Eastern Conference finals.

Now he will get another chance to earn his first career Stanley Cup. The 33-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, meaning he could always re-sign with the Islanders over the summer, although that rarely happens.

As such he has most likely played his last game in an Islanders jersey and will likely sign elsewhere in free agency next summer, if not retire from the NHL altogether.
